Professor John Yates III, PhD, has been awarded the Thomson Medal from the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation for his “invention of mass spectrometry and informatics methods to analyze protein expression, protein interactions and modifications.” Yates’ research in mass spectrometry has been fundamental in establishing the field of large-scale proteomics, a discipline that has shed light on diseases such as malaria and anthrax—and fueled drug discovery.
