The American Institute of Chemists gave its 2022 Chemical Pioneer Award to Chi-Huey Wong, PhD, holder of the Scripps Family Chair at Scripps Research. In his lab, Wong has created a wide range of tools for synthesizing and studying glycans and molecules with attached glycans, laying the groundwork for the burgeoning field of “glycobiology.” By removing the barriers to studying how sugars operate in the body, Wong is enabling discoveries that range from how sugars control the way proteins are manufactured in cells to the development of vaccines and drugs for diseases such as influenza, cancer, COVID-19 and HIV.
