Chi-Huey Wong, PhD

The Welch Foundation, one of the nation’s largest sources of private funding for basic chemical research, named Chi-Huey Wong, PhD, the 2021 recipient of its prestigious Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry. Wong, a professor in the Department of Chemistry, holds the Scripps Family Chair at Scripps Research.

In announcing the award, the foundation recognized Wong for his development of new methods for the synthesis of complex carbohydrates and glycoproteins and the elucidation of carbohydrate-mediated biological recognition associated with disease progression. “Not only has he made revolutionary advances in chemistry and biology,” said Carin Barth, chair and director of The Welch Foundation Board of Directors, “but his methodologies will facilitate new drug and vaccine development for years to come.”
