Contemporary research thrives on a diversity of ideas and perspectives, with participants hailing from every corner of the globe. Indeed, walking around the Scripps Research campus is an experience not unlike wandering the halls of the United Nations; one hears many different languages being spoken: English, German, Spanish, Mandarin, French, Japanese—the list goes on. What unites everyone in this proverbial tower of Babel is the language of science.
Throughout the year, the campus community hosts events to celebrate this diversity and expose people to different customs and traditions cherished by their fellow researchers. International Education Week is one such observance and an opportunity to highlight the many benefits global diversity brings to our education and training programs. At Scripps Research, the International Services Office, Office of Graduate Studies, Human Resources and other divisions mark International Education Week (IEW) annually with a series of events, workshops and social activities designed to bring the campus community closer together.
In November 2024, Scripps Research community members on the La Jolla campus and graduate students studying on the Wertheim UF Scripps Institute campus in Jupiter, Florida, celebrated IEW with a pair of international potlucks, a Swedish Fika coffee social and Diwali-themed coffee break, along with workshops on mindfulness, calligraphy and yoga, and a special interactive lecture exploring foreign language anxiety.
One of the main elements of Scripps Research’s recent IEW celebration was the 5th annual International Photo Contest. This year’s winners are as follows:
