Scripps Research associate professor Michael Bollong, PhD, was awarded the 2025 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Medicinal Chemistry Emerging Investigator Lectureship, which celebrates early-career researchers who’ve made significant contributions in the fields of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

RSC Medicinal Chemistry is a scientific journal that covers significant breakthroughs or advances in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. The journal’s annual Emerging Investigator Lectureship is selected by a judging panel that consists of the journal’s editorial board.

The board considers excellence in research, innovation, collaborations, community activity and quality of research or patents in its lectureship selection.

At Scripps Research, Bollong is leading research that has the potential to deliver transformative therapeutics in the field of regenerative medicine. His team utilizes high-throughput small molecule screens and target identification techniques to study and intervene in biological processes behind human diseases. Specifically, he and his team are working to uncover new methods to promote regenerative organ repair and activate protective cellular stress responses.

Recently, Bollong’s work as part of Scripps Research’s advancements in regenerative medicine was highlighted in The Wall Street Journal. His research has led to the development of the regenerative lung therapy, CMR316, which is now in a phase 1 clinical trial at Fraunhofer ITEM in Hanover, Germany, in healthy volunteers and patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Among his numerous honors, he is a recipient of the prestigious ACS Portoghese Lectureship, the David W. Robertson Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry, the 2023 Amgen Young Investigator Award, and the Baxter Foundation Young Faculty Award.

Bollong earned his doctoral degree in Chemical Biology at Scripps Research’s Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences. After receiving his degree, he was hired as the inaugural Scripps Research Fellow, a program designed to support the next generation of scientific leaders.

As part of the RCS Emerging Investigator Lectureship, Bollong will receive the opportunity to present his research at an international meeting.
