As humans live longer, they’re at increased risk of developing devastating neurodegenerative diseases. At Scripps Research, scientists are closer than ever to understanding how these diseases harm the brain and identifying possible drugs to stop them.
From the genetic underpinnings to visible behavioral outputs, Scripps Research scientists explore every part of how nerve impulses are transmitted and explore molecular approaches that could prevent, treat or even reverse conditions of the nervous system.
Today, cutting-edge microscopy and visualization technologies let scientists “see” biological details ranging from the inner workings of viruses to the architecture of protein assemblies. By drawing on the power of computational biology and collaborating across scientific disciplines, researchers are gaining unprecedented insights into the world—as well as what makes us human—like never before.
Scripps Research collaborations overcome the traditional academic silos of scientific fields, institutional departments, and laboratories.
The multidisciplinary center will focus on development of antiviral drugs to combat coronaviruses and other viruses with pandemic potential.
The complexity and diversity of the scientific initiatives at Scripps Research require leaders with varied expertise. Accordingly, the institute earlier this year elected entrepreneur and philanthropist Jennifer Rubio to its Board of Directors.
Early Career Investigator Award and inclusion on prestigious “35 Innovators Under 35” list among her accolades.
Ajayi has been named president of the San Diego County Medical Society.
Burton ranked seventh in the U.S. and ninth in the world for his impact on the field.
Hollis Cline, Jane Dyson and James Williamson were recognized for their “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.”
The American Institute of Chemists gave its 2022 Chemical Pioneer Award to Wong, holder of the Scripps Family Chair at Scripps Research.
Grotjahn received a Baxter Young Investigator Award and $100,000 to support her research.
Scripps Research advances scientific understanding, educates the scientists of tomorrow and impacts human health across the globe. We are science changing life.
